The history
of "Radbu" is extensive and would more than likely bore you into
visiting another website, so I'm going to keep it as brief and exciting as humanly
possible...
Ahem. It started waaaaay back in the summer of 1990, when Tom VanZandt, (that's
me) got a job working as a "come-waste-your-$$$" guy in one of those
"look-feeble-in-front-of-your-girl" games at
Riverside Amusement Park in Agawam, Massachusetts (Now the mighty SIX FLAGS OVER NEW ENGLAND!). It was here that Tom was
first introduced to the lovely and talented Mr. Aaron Wood (also a helpless
game slave). The two started talking and soon realized they both shared an
unhealthy love for comic books.
Having no other opportunities open to them at the time and also being insanely
jealous of... er,
I mean... inspired by the success and imagination of local comic book creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, (Yes, those Ninja Turtle
guys) Tom and Aaron decided that they wanted to create their very own comics
as well and get the hell out of the Amusement Park business. It was around this
time that Tom introduced Aaron to his high school pal, a young man by the name
of Jon "Don't call him JJ" Allegrezza, (also lovely and talented)
who had his own dreams and aspirations of greed and... um, bringing fresh
entertainment to the originality-starved masses.
The three soon started meeting weekly down in the basement of Aaron's house,
where their newly
formed brain trust was tentatively dubbed "Basement Productions"
(I know... too clever). All was going well until Tom, who was now working
at a local comic shop, met another independent comic creator who was publishing
his book under the name of "Basement Comics". $@*%! Needless to
say, the boys now needed a better name, that would reflect the type of product
they wanted to one day unleash. Something fresh, new and ORIGINAL.
They toyed with a few near-brilliant ideas... "Attic Productions",
"Cellar Productions" and even "Outhouse Productions" before
Tom offered to name the company after his 1980 Chevrolet Malibu. The car was
his pride and joy and was affectionately referred to as the "Radical
Malibu" or "Rad Bu".
Everyone seemed to love the name, (or maybe they were tired of arguing) and
so Radbu Productions was officially born!
(Sigh... Did I say brief? I guess I meant
unnecessarily wordy...)
Aaron :(Like all of his writing, hehehe)
Tom: (Very funny Aaron...)
Currently, Radbu is working on issue 4 of Captain Drew, when not on the
convention circuit on the east coast! Also, be on the lookout for the first
issue of Unhappy Gran'ma coming soon!
